TIMAU ROUTE

The Timau route approaches from the north side of the mountain. Initially the route meanders over gentle slopes, then at around 4200m the terrain steepens, and the route drops abruptly into and across the Hinde Valley, crossing the Nithi North river before climbing up to Simba Col. The route lies in a major rain shadow. As a result there is only a very narrow band of forest on this side of the mountain. However, thanks to the low rainfall, it generally makes for a drier trek, passing through scenic moorland. The slope is gentle, and because the alignment of Mt. Kenya’s peaks is from east to west, the view from the north gives the impression that you're approaching an entire mountain range.
